Sinusitis (sinus infection)

Facial pain, a blocked nose and pressure around your eyes? Our pharmacists can assess sinusitis and offer advice and, if needed, NHS treatment.

Sinusitis is swelling of the sinuses, usually caused by a viral infection after a cold. Most cases get better on their own within two to three weeks, but our pharmacists can help ease your symptoms and check whether you need treatment.

Common symptoms

  • Pain, swelling or tenderness around the cheeks, eyes or forehead
  • A blocked or runny nose, sometimes with green or yellow mucus
  • A reduced sense of smell
  • A high temperature, headache or toothache

How we can help

  • Advice on easing symptoms, such as rest, fluids and pain relief
  • Nasal sprays or decongestants where suitable
  • NHS treatment for people aged 12 and over if the pharmacist feels it is clinically appropriate
When to get urgent help: call 999 or go to A&E if you have swelling or redness around your eyes, changes to your vision, a severe headache, confusion or a stiff neck.
