Shingles

Shingles causes a painful rash and is best treated early. Speak to our pharmacists as soon as possible, ideally within three days of the rash appearing.

Shingles is caused by the same virus as chickenpox. It usually starts with a tingling or burning feeling, followed by a rash on one side of the body. Early treatment can help ease symptoms and reduce the risk of longer-term problems.

Common symptoms

  • A tingling, burning or painful feeling in an area of skin
  • A blotchy rash on one side of the body that turns into itchy blisters
  • Feeling generally unwell or having a high temperature

How we can help

  • Assessment of the rash in a private consultation room
  • NHS treatment for adults aged 18 and over where appropriate
  • Advice on managing pain and avoiding passing the virus on
When to get urgent help: contact NHS 111 or your GP urgently if the rash is near your eye or you have changes to your vision, you are pregnant, or you have a weakened immune system.
