New Medicine Service (NMS)

Started a new medicine for a long-term condition? Our pharmacists offer free support to help you get the best from it.

Starting a new medicine can raise questions about side effects, how and when to take it, and whether it is working. The NHS New Medicine Service gives you follow-up support from your pharmacist over the first few weeks.

Who it is for

The service is for people who have been newly prescribed a medicine for certain long-term conditions, such as asthma, COPD, type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure, high cholesterol and some heart conditions.

What you get

  • A conversation with your pharmacist when you start your medicine
  • A follow-up consultation, in person or by phone, a few weeks later
  • Help with side effects or concerns, and liaison with your GP if needed
